Dog Training Services

About imageAbout image
Chloe's Choice Dog Training Services looks to provide answers, train your dog in a way that you are happy with and work towards goals set by you. Some examples include, but are not limited to:
  • Basic training i.e. sit, down, quiet
  • Faster reaction/response time
  • Improved reliability and recall
  • Off-leash control/control at a distance
  • Resolve nipping/biting or anything related (lunging etc)
  • Resolve fearfulness
  • Resolve jumping up
  • Improve home-alone anxiety
  • Improve on O.C.D behaviours
  • Crate training
The list goes on, and so do the possibilities. A surprising amount of seeds can be sown in one session, and with a few tips to take home you might also be surprised by how much of the process you can complete yourself.

Positive reinforcement training is used because it is fun, encouraging, and simply superior to other methods.
There will be no need for:
-Shock collars,
-Choker chains,
-Leash jerks/tugging,
-Knees to the chest.
No pain or discomfort will be recommended or inflicted by me as a part of the training program. I believe solely in positive reinforcement, and for 'non-believers' the results usually clear sooner than you'd think, even in 'problem dogs'.

Chloe's Choice D.T.S are canine lessons that come to you. Sessions can take place wherever is best suited to you, whether it be at the dog park or your home (read the F.A.Q section for more details). Depending on your goals a home visit might be recommended so we can work with a more focused dog for the introductory period. We will be mobile to suit your goals and your dog's learning needs as they progress, for example; for off/on-leash control we might find ourselves at the dog park, as long as it is safe to do so (socialising might need to come first).

Every canine is teachable, but (just like people) the longer they have a habit or behaviour trait, the longer it takes to correct it. I believe that every dog is a ‘good’ dog, some are simply confused and unsure how to please you, while others are stubborn and just don’t know that they want to yet. My job is to assess your dog, find out what you hope to achieve with lessons, and to work toward those goals in a safe, positive and progressive way with your dog. Whether your dog is young or old, shy or outrageous, reluctant or nippy, they are worth working with. Together we will help your dog learn how to please you -and most of all- learn how to want to please you.

While a dog could be considered a puppy until 2-3 years old, 3 weeks to 3 months is the perfect window for the foundations to be laid. By this I mean the basis of the dog's future understanding of the world, i.e. whether children are scary, hats are suspicious, men are mean, dogs are the enemy, or if it’s okay to bite, etc. etc.

The best way to lay good ground work for the dog’s future wellbeing is through socialisation with people (especially children), socialisation with other dogs (be immunised), bite inhibition, and toilet training. This will reduce a lot of stress in the future for both animal and owner, and all are almost as easy as they are important.

Other important lessons to engrave would be what can be chewed, how to be alone (to avoid boredom and anxiety when everyone is out), that the crate/kennel is not a punishment, how to be comfortable around food and to know the source (you), most of all how to play and have fun. There are so many things that a young puppy can learn and benefit from!

Older Dogs imageOlder Dogs image
Whether your dog is just getting out of adolescence, 'middle-aged' or deep in senior years, he is capable of learning! As mentioned already though, the longer a dog has a habit the harder it is to change. If your dog is fearful, shy, or ‘grumpy’ he will benefit from lessons no matter the age, mainly because any amount that we can reduce these negative feelings by and replace them with good ones, the happier he will be in life.

It is always worth contacting me, I can read/hear your situation and advise the best ways to improve your senior dog's happiness and safety based on your ideas or concerns (you might only need some ‘homework’ tips depending on what you're looking to achieve).

I'm interested- what now?

Contact me in your preferred medium i.e. call, text or email. I will respond with a few questions about your dog/s and then we will arrange a day, time, and place to meet. Choose how long you would like the lesson to be, understandably you might only want a half first session to test the waters.

What should I expect?

The first session will consist of a discussion about what you want to achieve from lessons, an assessment of your dog so I know how to proceed, and finally some training. The discussion and assessment time is not charged and you are free to back out by the end of that time (although travel cost may still apply). If you are happy for us to proceed with training then we will continue. Training times can be as long or as short as you decide, and the lengths can change from session to session to suit your schedule (a typical training lesson would be an hour). There will need to be a chance for me to go over the progress of your dog, and the things you can do at home to maintain and improve this progress.
At the end of each training session there will be the option to arrange and book the next one (for a discount), but this is not essential or expected.

Do I stay for the session?

It is completely up to you as the owner whether you want to stay through the whole process, just for some of it, or none of the actual session. While it is essential for you to be a part of the training process, you don't have to be at the lessons and watch, you can go about your house chores for a home call or I can pick up your dog and drop him off for park sessions. All that is important is for you to have enough time to discuss any lessons we have. Understandably everyone has different situations and if you want your dog to have more learning time than what you can be available for, that can easily be arranged. It is essential though that you are kept up to date with your dog's progress and are willing to take his learning home with you.

What is the "assessment"

This is the time I will take to meet your dog and interact with him to determine what approach in training will be best suited to his needs. We will take some base tests on some of the things you want to improve on so that we can track the improvement as the lessons go by.
It is your decision what commands and behaviours we get base tests on.

What are the costs?

As mentioned in another F.A.Q, the first session will be longer because of the discussion and assessment time but this is uncharged. The standard rate will be $70/hr ($55/hr for follow-ups, if booked within one week of the previous session). Travel costs may be charged at $0.40c/km depending on your location.
